 > Asthma and Allergies

May is asthma and allergy awareness month and Community Health Charities joins members American Lung Association and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America in raising awareness of the seriousness of asthma and allergies.

Allergic disease, including allergic asthma, is the country's most common and costly illness. Approximately 38 percent of all Americans suffer from some sort of allergic condition. Allergies are the most frequently reported chronic condition in children, limiting activities in more than 40 percent of these children. An estimated two million school days are lost each year due to allergies, with an indirect cost reaching $4 billion.

Stories of Caring is a testimonial that we share with you, our donors, so you can learn about how the dollars you donate help real people in Kansas and Missouri and how Community Health Charities helps to connect people with trusted member charities nationwide every day.

Staff Sergeant Mark Thompson convinced the Army that having type-1 diabetes should not keep him from serving in Iraq. Thompson, 28, is an Iowa native. He has been married for nine years and has a son, Kyle, who is two years old. He has always had something of a travel bug, and it was this desire to see the world that inspired Thompson to join the Army. That, and the stories he heard from his college roommate -- an older student who had served in the Vietnam War. As Thompson listened, the Army started to sound like an adventure.
